Dementia is the greatest global challenge for health and social care in the 21st century. It occurs mainly in people older than 65 years, so increases in numbers and costs are driven, worldwide, by increased longevity resulting from the welcome reduction in people dying prematurely.

Prevention of dementia, or delaying the onset of symptoms, is possible in as many as 35% of people, as outlined in The Lancet's 2017 Commission on dementia. As modelled in the Commission, modifiable risk factors for dementia over a lifetime include early-life education, hypertension, hearing impairment, obesity, smoking, depression, physical inactivity, diabetes, and social isolation.
